Although hearing loss is more common as we age, it can also be caused by a variety of factors including ear infections, abnormal growths, a ruptured eardrum, prolonged exposure to loud noises/music, and even as a result of built up earwax or other fluids. In children or babies, hearing loss can also happen as a result of birth complications, frequent ear infections, or exposure to loud sounds.

The best thing to do before beginning your search is to take a hearing test. This will help your doctor pinpoint the source of your hearing loss so that they can offer personalized solutions to improve your hearing ability.
Depending on the severity of your hearing loss as well as your personal preference, there are a few styles to consider before finding your perfect fit:
BTE (behind-the-ear) hearing aids are worn close to the head, where they direct sound into your ear canal. They usually come in colors that closely match your hair or skin.
ITE (in the ear) or Full Shell sit directly inside the ear canal and are less noticeable than the BTE. This style also has the longest lasting battery and most powerful amplification.
ITC (in the canal) or Half Shell sit in the bottom part of the outer ear. Though they are more discreet, they have a shorter battery life and are less powerful.
CIC (completely in the canal) hearing aids are the smallest available, making them virtually invisible, although they have the shortest battery life.
