Marvel: How to Combat Chronic Allergies
Allergies affect every person differently. For some, sneezes and sniffles come and go with changing seasons, and are easily controlled by decongestants or a few extra tissues. For many others, allergies are chronic (also known as perennial, or year-round) and can be so severe that they interfere with everyday life. Symptoms usually include sneezing, a runny nose, fatigue, itchy eyes, and congestion. Left untreated, people may experience facial swelling, infections, asthma, reduced vision, sleep disruption, or chronic fatigue.
While seasonal allergies are typically caused by pollen from trees, weeds, or grass, people who suffer from year-long allergies are typically allergic to dust mites, mold, animal dander, or cockroach debris. Allergies can be debilitating, but luckily there a variety of simple options for finding relief.
For starters, knowing exactly what you’re allergic to or what your triggers are is the best way to combat your allergies. If you’re armed with the knowledge of what exacerbates your symptoms, you can better avoid and thus properly address those allergens.
In your home:
Vacuum with a HEPA filter to reduce exposure while cleaning
Use dust-mite proof covers for all bedding
Keep windows closed during high pollen seasons (spring and fall)
Wash your hands frequently with soap and water
Avoid touching or rubbing your nose or eyes
Control symptoms with over-the-counter:
Decongestants
Nasal sprays
Antihistamines
Eye drops
Oral medications
Although allergens are the most common culprit, chronic sinus issues can also be the result of nasal polyps, a deviated septum, a respiratory tract infection, gastroesophageal reflux, a cleft palate, or cystic fibrosis. It’s important to have your symptoms diagnosed and treated by an allergist or ENT to make sure that your chronic sinusitis is not something more serious.
