What To Do About A Snoring Spouse
If your spouse or partner snores, it can be a major strain on your rest and your relationship. In fact, many marital problems stem from snoring, and some couples even cite snoring as a factor that makes or breaks their marriage.
If your partner’s snoring becomes unmanageable, many couples find that sleeping in separate beds or bedrooms can be an easy fix, while others take advantage of earplugs or headphones. You can also encourage your partner to try sleeping on either their side or stomach, which can help prevent snoring.
Sometimes, snoring is caused by other factors, most of which have an easy fix. If you are overweight, diet or exercise to maintain a healthy weight can be helpful. Eliminating alcohol or sedating medications within three hours of bedtime may also decrease snoring.
You may be tempted to try waking your partner if their snoring is affecting your rest, but the best thing to do is talk to them during the day to address the real problem at hand.
While snoring can be a major inconvenience, it is sometimes also indicative of many, often serious, health problems. In a National Sleep Foundation poll, 50% of people who were at risk for sleep apnea, or who had a partner at risk for sleep apnea, reported that it caused problems in their relationship. Habitual snorers can also suffer from:
Heart attack
Stroke
Daytime drowsiness
Irritability
Lack of focus
Decreased libdo
It’s important to not just treat, but also diagnose what is causing their snoring. Encouraging them to visit an ENT (ear, nose, and throat doctor) or even a primary care physician can be the first step in preserving their health and your sanity.
